How To Build A Brand & Make Movies – Part 4 of 4

Posted on: No Comments

Okay, so it took me a while to get this last part up. Things have been busy and getting this last video out took longer than expected.

That said, this video covers some valuable information about the need to build a reputable network of contacts, if you want to create a personal brand people will pay money to see and make films with budgets that are bigger than whatever you can squeeze onto your credit card.

Have a look at this last video from my trip down to the American Film Market. I’m looking a little worse for the wear, but still wanted to get you the final thoughts from my time at the event:

So there you have it. If you know of people with skills in the industry, get them excited about what you are doing or find material that does excite them. If you don’t know anyone, get out there and make some friends in the places where the right people are hanging out. Don’t limit yourself to people who are high up the food chain though, because they aren’t always easy to meet. You can have just as much success, if not more, by meeting people who may not have a lot of influence, but are well connected.

Make sure you get to know what people are good at and never under value a skill set. It is true that a hair stylist who works on studio films isn’t going to get your film made, but they can be a valuable part of your crew list. Their experience counts when it comes to how seriously you are taking that aspect of your own production. Not only that, but it is people like these that may very well have connections that can get your film made.

Now that we’ve finished with this little Hollywood excursion, I need to jump into some script reviews and maybe even start work on my next writing project. I’ll let you know how that’s going a little later.

Talk soon,

Sebastian

    Hollywood

The thing about the film industry is that it can be a lot of fun just hopping around and getting to know people. However, if you are serious about developing a career for yourself as an actor, a writer, or a producer, then you eventually have to get a grip on how to do the business. Building your brand means doing the work necessary to get it out there.

As much as my previous two videos may have looked like fun and games, I was actually talking to people about how they want to see business done. As the pieces of the puzzle came together, this was the first big insight that hit me…

“You have to be willing to bring everything to the table to make your ideas attractive.

What I mean by the above is that you need to think less about what you want and more about what the movie people you are talking to want. In other words, what would attract you to the idea of helping someone make a movie, if you could pick and choose?

Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

    1. Do you have some amazing recognizable talent interested in your script, be they well known actors, directors, or producers?

    2. Are you coming to the table with large portions of the financing in place and looking for help on the marketing end?

    3. If you lack money, do you maybe have a distribution deal in waiting and talent attached, but need some financial backing?

If you can say yes to any of these, you are in a better position than a lot of people who still think they can just get a good script in their hand and sail into success. Sure… Lightning can strike, but the odds are not in your favor, so your best bet is to go in prepared to make your entertainment brand look a lot more appealing.

If you haven’t already, check out the video above for my initial thoughts on how Hollywood looks for successful potential projects or people to work with.

    Talk to you again soon,
